Child Passenger Safety Program
Easterseals provides exceptional services, education, outreach, and advocacy so that people living with autism and other disabilities can live, learn, work and play in our communities.
Special Kids Are Riding Safe (Special KARS) is available to help families with children (under 18 years old) who cannot be secured in a conventional car seat because of size, injury, or disabilities. There are car seats and restraints available for children who weight at least 3 lbs., have leg or full-body casts, need additional support for the head or trunk, or have a high activity level. These services have not been affected directly by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Easterseals Certified Car Seat Technicians provide the following services:
Consultation
- Information about the types, costs, and vendors of child restraints. This includes recommendations for individual children based on their age, size, and need.
Loan Program
- Due to the limited number of special child restraints for children between the weight of 3 to 108 pounds, the child restraints are lent to families for free for up to 6 months.
Education
- There are education programs available to parent groups and health and education professionals. These programs provide information about how to position children in vehicles using both conventional and special needs car seats and restraints.
