About Butler County
Ohio State University Extension has been serving Butler County residents for a little more than 90 years. When Extension started in the early 1900s, with the passage of the Smith-Lever Act, more than 40% of the population lived on a farm. Therefore Extension programming in the county reflected the needs of the county – agriculture, home economics, youth development (4-H) and civics. Today, Butler County is much more metropolitan and culturally diverse. Although our programming has shifted to address the needs of today’s world, we still work in similar areas – agriculture and natural resources, youth development (4-H), family and consumer sciences, and community development.
