Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy uses water to help children make the most of their abilities on land. The goal is to help the child improve skills for daily life, and be able to participate in land-based therapy or a home-based program.
Physical therapy (PT) in the water can improve:
- Lower body and core strength
- Balance
- Coordination
- Motor planning
- Endurance
- Range of motion
- Walking
- Level of pain
Occupational therapy (OT) uses the water to provide children with a multi-sensory experience. By using the resistance of water (instead of weights), patients rehabilitating after an injury or those with chronic illness avoid excess weight and pressure normally put on the joints. This type of therapy can improve:
- Body awareness
- Self-regulation
- Upper body strength
- Coordination
- Motor planning
- Endurance
- Range of motion
